Commuter life – From Flekkerøy to Flekkefjord
Jorunn Sandvik from Flekkerøy is the new clinic director at Sørlandet Hospital Flekkefjord, where she had her first day of work on 1 September 2024. She now commutes between her apartment in Skottelia, Flekkefjord and the house on Flekkerøy. Jorunn has been greeted with smiles and friendliness in Flekkefjord and looks forward to every day at work!
SAFETY AND GOOD TREATMENT - When we ask what prompted her to apply for the job as clinic director at Sørlandet hospital Flekkefjord, Jorunn answers quickly: - I knew that I wanted to contribute with my ability to build cooperation, so that the hospital in Flekkefjord can continue to be run as an active and attractive hospital, where patients and staff experience good treatment and security in a good working environment. The position seemed both challenging and exciting.
CLOSE FAMILY BONDS - The new clinic director has a close-knit family, even though she has moved to Flekkefjord. - I have two daughters, Tuva aged 21 and Anna aged 19. They study in in Oslo and Hamar and often stays in Lyngdal where their father lives and likes to come to Flekkefjord, she says.
Jorunn now lives in Skottelia in Flekkefjord, but has meetings in Kristiansand and other places. She has kept her house on Flekkerøy, where she and her daughters come home on certain days, as well as holidays and some weekends. This gives Jorunn the opportunity to balance her working life with time with her daughters when the opportunity arises. The apartment in Skottelia has a beautiful view over the fjord, which doesn't hurt, for someone who grew up on Flekkerøy and loves the coast.
GOOD MEMORIES FROM FLEKKEFJORD - The Flekkerøy girl has fond childhood memories of Flekkefjord. - I have been on a trip over here several times. First at a corps meeting in my childhood, then I mostly remember that there were heavy hills to march on. I have also been rail biking on the Flekkefjord track, visited the Brufjellhålene and spent the night at the beautiful Hidra, many years ago. Only good memories from this.
REGIONAL FOCUS - What does she think about regional cooperation? The new clinic director seems committed: - Working together within the region to recruit staff and retain jobs is an important part of our social responsibility, I think. We must use our energy together to find good solutions so that good people want to stay in and move to our region here in the western part of Agder. It is important that we do not see municipalities and hospitals as competitors, but work together well, for the good of the community. After all, the patients we will treat are the same, in different phases of life.
PROUD, FINE COLLEAGUES IN FLEKKEJFORD - Jorunn looks forward to every day at work and raves about her fine colleagues. Starting on 1 September, she is still working to get an overview of the new job. We wonder what is the most positive thing about working at Sørlandet Hospital Flekkefjord.
- All the proud, nice people who work at the hospital in Flekkefjord. I have been received so well, and there are smiles and friendliness everywhere, says Jorunn.
She also values professionalism, honesty, and a desire to support one another, as well as a strong willingness to give their best when it matters.
FROM NURSE TO CLINIC DIRECTOR - Jorunn has a solid professional background as a nurse, with experience from both medical bedsides, emergency departments and as an HR advisor. She also has a management degree from UIA and has in recent years worked as head of department at the ENT department at Somatikk Kristiansand. When she saw the job advertisement for clinic director at the hospital in Flekkefjord, she immediately knew that this was a job she wanted. Being able to contribute to building collaboration within SSHF and ensuring that the hospital in Flekkefjord remains an attractive workplace was an exciting challenge.
WILL WORK ON STRENGTHENING THE RESOURCES - Although Jorunn enjoys his new position, there are also challenges. She points out that one of the biggest challenges in healthcare is meeting everyone's needs. The resources are not always enough, and she wishes it were possible to help everyone at once. It is a challenge she hopes to help solve through her work.
WORK/HOME BALANCE - Something that is heavily focused on in working life is work/home balance. We ask if Jorunn has it. - I myself feel that I have it. My life, without children/young people living at home, will probably mean that much of my time goes to work, but I also have a good social network and people around me who mean a lot to me. I don't have family in Flekkefjord, but I have a good, former colleague who has taught me a lot, I hope to get in touch with him now, if he has time, now that he is retired.
FAMILY, FRIENDS AND GOOD HEALTH - We ask the clinic director what is most important to her, so that she can have a good everyday life and whether she feels that she can fulfill those wishes here in Flekkefjord. She is clear in her speech:
- Family, friends and good health mean a lot to a good everyday life, and being able to get up and go to a job where you can make a difference is important. I feel that I get to fulfill that now, here in Flekkefjord, concludes Jorunn with a smile.
Proud and nice colleagues, a beautiful place she has fond memories of, an exciting and challenging job, a good network, work/home balance, good health and not least... the fjord view from the apartment seems to be a good combination for a island girl like Jorunn. We welcome her to Flekkefjord and wish her good luck in the future!
